Psalm 6
A Prayer for Mercy
 1
For the choir director: with stringed instruments, according to Sheminith (A). A Davidic psalm.
 1 LORD, do not rebuke me in Your anger;
    do not discipline me in Your wrath. (B)

    2 Be gracious to me, LORD, for I am weak; (C) [a]
    heal me, (D) LORD, for my bones are shaking; (E)

    3 my whole being is shaken with terror. (F)
    And You, LORD— how long? (G)

    4 Turn, LORD! Rescue me;
    save me because of Your faithful love. (H)

    5 For there is no remembrance of You in death;
    who can thank You in Sheol? (I)

    6 I am weary from my groaning; (J)
    with my tears I dampen my pillow [b]
    and drench my bed every night. (K)

    7 My eyes are swollen from grief; (L)
    they [c] grow old because of all my enemies.

    8 Depart from me, all evildoers,
    for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping. (M)

    9 The LORD has heard my plea for help; (N)
    the LORD accepts my prayer. (O)

    10 All my enemies will be ashamed and shake with terror;
    they will turn back (P) and suddenly be disgraced. (Q)
Psalm 7
Prayer for Justice
A Shiggaion [d] of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning the words of Cush, [e] a Benjaminite.
 1 LORD my God, I seek refuge in You; (R)
    save me from all my pursuers and rescue me, (S)

    2 or they [f] will tear me like a lion,
    ripping me apart, with no one to rescue me. (T) [g]

    3 LORD my God, if I have done this,
    if there is injustice on my hands, (U)

    4 if I have done harm to one at peace with me (V)
    or have plundered [h] my adversary without cause, (W)

    5 may an enemy pursue and overtake me;
    may he trample me to the ground (X)
    and leave my honor in the dust. (Y)

          Selah

    6 Rise up, LORD, in Your anger;
    lift Yourself up against the fury of my adversaries; (Z)
    awake for me; (AA) [i]
    You have ordained [j] a judgment. (AB)

    7 Let the assembly of peoples gather around You; (AC)
    take Your seat [k] on high over it. (AD)

    8 The LORD judges the peoples; (AE)
    vindicate me, LORD,
    according to my righteousness and my integrity. (AF) [l]

    9 Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, (AG)
    but establish the righteous. (AH)
    The One who examines the thoughts and emotions [m]
    is a righteous God. (AI)

    10 My shield is with [n] God, (AJ)
    who saves the upright in heart. (AK)

    11 God is a righteous judge,
    and a God who executes justice every day. (AL)

    12 If anyone does not repent,
    God [o] will sharpen His sword; (AM)
    He has strung [p] His bow and made it ready. (AN)

    13 He has prepared His deadly weapons;
    He tips His arrows with fire. (AO)

    14 See, he is pregnant with evil,
    conceives trouble, and gives birth to deceit. (AP)

    15 He dug a pit and hollowed it out,
    but fell into the hole he had made. (AQ)

    16 His trouble comes back on his own head,
    and his violence falls on the top of his head. (AR)

    17 I will thank the LORD for His righteousness;
    I will sing about the name of the LORD, the Most High. (AS)
Psalm 8
God's Glory, Man's Dignity
For the choir director: on the Gittith (AT). A Davidic psalm.
 1 LORD, our Lord,
    how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth! (AU)
    You have covered the heavens with Your majesty. (AV) [q]

    2 Because of Your adversaries,
    You have established a stronghold [r]
    from the mouths of children and nursing infants, (AW)
    to silence the enemy and the avenger.

    3 When I observe Your heavens,
    the work of Your fingers,
    the moon and the stars,
    which You set in place, (AX)

    4 what is man that You remember him,
    the son of man that You look after him? (AY)

    5 You made him little less than God [s] [t]
    and crowned him with glory and honor.

    6 You made him lord over the works of Your hands;
    You put everything under his feet: (AZ) [u]

    7 all the sheep and oxen,
    as well as animals in the wild,

    8 birds of the sky,
    and fish of the sea
    passing through the currents of the seas. (BA)

    9 LORD, our Lord,
    how magnificent is Your name throughout the earth!
Psalm 9
Celebration of God's Justice
For the choir director: according to Muth&nbhyph;labben. [v] A Davidic psalm.
 1 I will thank the LORD with all my heart;
    I will declare all Your wonderful works. (BB)

    2 I will rejoice and boast about You; (BC)
    I will sing about Your name, Most High. (BD)

    3 When my enemies retreat,
    they stumble and perish before You. (BE)

    4 For You have upheld my just cause; (BF) [w]
    You are seated on Your throne as a righteous judge. (BG)

    5 You have rebuked the nations: (BH)
    You have destroyed the wicked; (BI)
    You have erased their name forever and ever. (BJ)

    6 The enemy has come to eternal ruin;
    You have uprooted the cities,
    and the very memory of them has perished. (BK)

    7 But the LORD sits enthroned forever; (BL)
    He has established His throne for judgment. (BM)

    8 He judges the world with righteousness;
    He executes judgment on the peoples with fairness. (BN)

    9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
    a refuge in times of trouble. (BO)

    10 Those who know Your name trust in You
    because You have not abandoned
    those who seek You, LORD. (BP)

    11 Sing to the LORD, who dwells in Zion; (BQ)
    proclaim His deeds among the peoples. (BR)

    12 For the One who seeks an accounting
    for bloodshed remembers them; (BS)
    He does not forget the cry of the afflicted. (BT)

    13 Be gracious to me, LORD;
    consider my affliction at the hands of those who hate me. (BU)
    Lift me up from the gates of death, (BV)

    14 so that I may declare all Your praises.
    I will rejoice in Your salvation (BW)
    within the gates of Daughter Zion. [x]

    15 The nations have fallen into the pit they made;
    their foot is caught in the net they have concealed. (BX)

    16 The LORD has revealed Himself;
    He has executed justice, (BY)
    striking down [y] the wicked [z]
    by the work of their hands. (BZ)

          Higgaion. Selah

    17 The wicked will return to Sheol (CA) —
    all the nations that forget God. (CB)

    18 For the oppressed will not always be forgotten;
    the hope of the afflicted [aa] will not perish forever. (CC)

    19 Rise up, LORD! Do not let man prevail;
    let the nations be judged in Your presence. (CD)

    20 Put terror in them, LORD; (CE)
    let the nations know they are only men. (CF)

         Selah
Psalm 10
 1 LORD, [ab] why do You stand so far away? (CG)
    Why do You hide in times of trouble? (CH)

    2 In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue the afflicted;
    let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. (CI)

    3 For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; (CJ)
    the one who is greedy curses [ac] and despises the LORD. (CK)

    4 In all his scheming,
    the wicked arrogantly thinks: [ad]
    "There is no accountability,
    [since] God does not exist." (CL)

    5 His ways are always secure; [ae]
    Your lofty judgments are beyond his sight;
    he scoffs at all his adversaries. (CM)

    6 He says to himself, "I will never be moved—
    from generation to generation without calamity." (CN)

    7 Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;
    trouble and malice are under his tongue. (CO)

    8 He waits in ambush near the villages; (CP)
    he kills the innocent in secret places;
    his eyes are on the lookout for the helpless. (CQ)

    9 He lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket.
    He lurks in order to seize the afflicted.
    He seizes the afflicted and drags him in his net.

    10 He crouches and bends down;
    the helpless fall because of his strength. (CR)

    11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten;
    He hides His face and will never see." (CS)

    12 Rise up, LORD God! Lift up Your hand. (CT)
    Do not forget the afflicted. (CU)

    13 Why has the wicked despised God?
    He says to himself, "You will not demand an account." (CV)

    14 But You Yourself have seen trouble and grief,
    observing it in order to take the matter into Your hands. (CW)
    The helpless entrusts himself to You;
    You are a helper of the fatherless. (CX)

    15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil person; (CY)
    call his wickedness into account
    until nothing remains of it. (CZ) [af]

    16 The LORD is King forever and ever; (DA)
    the nations will perish from His land. (DB)

    17 LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; [ag]
    You will strengthen their hearts.
    You will listen carefully, (DC)

    18 doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed,
    so that men of the earth may terrify [them] no more. (DD)

Romans 12

Living Sacrifices
 1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual[a] act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his[b]faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Love
 9Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.

 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay,"[d]says the Lord. 20On the contrary:
   "If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
      if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
   In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."[e] 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

John 13

Jesus Washes His Disciples' Feet
 1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.[a]

 2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"

 7Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."

 8"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet."
      Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."

 9"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"

 10Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
 18"I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'[b]

 19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. 20I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."

 21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."

 22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."

 25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"

 26Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

   "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, 28but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
 31When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him,[c] God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

 33"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

 34"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

 36Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?"
      Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."

 37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

 38Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

Psalms 1-3 (Today's New International Version)

Psalm 1-3 (Today's New International Version)

Psalm 1

BOOK I
Psalms 1—41
 1 Blessed are those
       who do not walk in step with the wicked
       or stand in the way that sinners take
       or sit in the company of mockers,

    2 but who delight in the law of the LORD
       and meditate on his law day and night.

    3 They are like a tree planted by streams of water,
       which yields its fruit in season
       and whose leaf does not wither—
       whatever they do prospers.

    4 Not so the wicked!
       They are like chaff
       that the wind blows away.

    5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
       nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

    6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
       but the way of the wicked will be destroyed.

Psalm 2

 1 Why do the nations conspire [a]
       and the peoples plot in vain?

    2 The kings of the earth rise up
       and the rulers band together
       against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,

    3 "Let us break their chains
       and throw off their shackles."

    4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
       the Lord scoffs at them.

    5 He rebukes them in his anger
       and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

    6 "I have installed my king
       on Zion, my holy mountain."

    7 I will proclaim the LORD's decree:
       He said to me, "You are my son;
       today I have become your father.

    8 Ask me,
       and I will make the nations your inheritance,
       the ends of the earth your possession.

    9 You will break them with a rod of iron [b];
       you will dash them to pieces like pottery."

    10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;
       be warned, you rulers of the earth.

    11 Serve the LORD with fear
       and celebrate his rule with trembling.

    12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry
       and you and your ways will be destroyed,
       for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
       Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Psalm 3

A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.
   [c] 1 LORD, how many are my foes!
       How many rise up against me!

    2 Many are saying of me,
       "God will not deliver him." [d]

    3 But you, LORD, are a shield around me,
       my glory, the one who lifts my head high.

    4 I call out to the LORD,
       and he answers me from his holy mountain.

    5 I lie down and sleep;
       I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.

    6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
       assail me on every side.

    7 Arise, LORD!
       Deliver me, my God!
       Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
       break the teeth of the wicked.

    8 From the LORD comes deliverance.
       May your blessing be on your people.
