Tips On Getting Your Home Winter Ready - WVNS-TV

With the cold weather on the way, people are turning off the air conditioning and cranking up the heat. With that said, is your home winter ready? As we put on the winter coats, residents in Princeton are also gearing up their home for winter. Elitha Harvey and her husband William have been living in their home in Princeton for 8 years. They're getting ready for the temperatures to drop.

Elitha said, "Just clean out the vents and every month we clean out the filters. It's a gas heat pump and we have one big vent and vents in every room."

The couple said they have storm windows to keep the cold air from getting through. William said they also have one space heater in their home.

William said, "We just keep things away from it. That thing will heat up a house."

Captain Keith Gunnoe with the Princeton Fire Department urges residents to make sure space heaters are away from combustible objects. You're also encouraged to have your furnace and chimney checked by a professional to prevent fires.

Gunnoe said, "Make sure your water lines are insulated and that type of thing so you don't end up with freezing water lines. If you do have drafty windows, you can buy window seals. That will seal that stuff up. A lot of people lose a lot of heat due to drafty doors and windows especially in older homes."

Firefighters encourage residents to be sure to have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors since heating systems will soon be on full blast.
