Zits steals a joke

In today's Zits comic strip, Pierce says "I believe that paperclips are the larval stage of wire coat hangers." http://www.arcamax.com/zits/s-235240-821437I'm not real pleased about this. The comic's writers (Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman) lifted the joke from a wonderful story called "Or All The Sea With Oysters" by Avram Davidson. The story was first published in 1958, but it won a major award and was widely reprinted, most notably in The Hugo Winners, Book One.*daha*

The Adventures of Wassup Holmes

My truelove was shopping for groceries and encountered a person set up at a table of used books, being sold to fund some charity or another. She bought a small hardback reissue of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which I re-read with delight. I then sought out more of the canon online, and in reading the story "The Silver Blaze" I encountered the word "penanglawyer" which from context is a type of walking stick, suitable for clubbing a horse trainer to death.A google search on penanglawyer brought me to a youtube account by that name, at which has been posted favorited a number of Holmes-related videos. Therein I discovered The Adventures of Wassup Holmes and laughed my ass off. It helps if you've read The Hound of the Baskervilles and it helps if you can enjoy white boys rapping.*daha*

Must rent movie

Must rent movie: Hoodwinked. Sure, they marketed it as a kids movie, but it works all the way for adults. Stoned adults will love it even more, but you don't need drugs to enjoy it. Just turn it on, and laugh, and smile between the laughs. If I tell you that it is an animated musical retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, you'll probably decide that it couldn't possibly entertain adults, so I won't tell you that. *daha*

Got Netflix

Got Netflix? Enjoy stand-up comedy? Add Bill Hicks: Sane Man to your queue.I usually burn out 30-45 minutes into any stand-up set, but this held my attention and kept me laughing all the way through. Lotsa bad words and sexual description. Recorded in 1989 (he died in 1994), so there are some cultural references (Debbie Gibson!) that are a bit past date.*daha*

I saw yet another friends-list post saying (paraphrased) I can't post nude pics anymore because they are showing up on outside sites

I saw yet another friends-list post saying (paraphrased) I can't post nude pics anymore because they are showing up on outside sites. And that was followed by a post from someone else asking how people deal with the risk of people they know seeing her nude pics. I replied:The only safe assumption to make is that your pics and videos will end up widely distributed. Eventually they will reach everyone who knows you, both professionally and personally. If you ever achieve a measure of fame, someone will tip off the news media and share your images with them.People who like naked pictures share them with friends or share them with the world. There's no way to put the worms back in the can once they're let loose. I've seen a large number of women post goodbye messages to their journals - their pictures were being re-posted to large volume websites, their pictures were being re-posted with rude comments edited in, or insulting drawings added, or photoshopped in embarrassing and obnxious ways, etc.As a voyeur,...

Engrish menu most amusing

This is over a year old, but new to me. A Chinese restaurant menu with awful translations into English - not just one or two or three outstandingly outlandish strangely nonsensical lines, but dozens of them!Standard warnings apply - pee before clicking, and put down any drinks.http://www.rahoi.com/2006/03/may-i-take-your-order/*daha*

Live Earth! coming here, so we'll go see it!

Live Earth is coming to the Mall after all! Sort-of! We'll be there!Al Gore had wanted to hold the North American version of the Live Earth concerts at the National Mall, Washington DC. (It's not a shopping mall - it's the open greenspace running from the US Capital, between the Smithsonian museums, then up a hill to the Washington Monument, then continuing past the Vietnam memorial wall to the Lincoln Memorial). The Mall already had two large events scheduled, Gore and the Live Earth group couldn't get access. They tried to get the steps of the Capital building, and this was blocked by the Republicans on the grounds that the steps could not be used for partisan events, and preventing catastrophic global warming is only of interest to Democrats. So the concert was scheduled at Giants Stadium in New Jersey instead. It's still going to happen there, with a huge lineup of talent. But ALSO, Live Earth has been invited to piggyback onto a scheduled event at the Mall. The National Museum of the American...

Netspeak hurts my head (generation gap)

Continued random lj hops brought me to this. It makes my head hurt. The writer knows what paragraph blocking is, because she had breaks before and after this bit, she just chose not to use them in this stream of consciousness piece. I can follow most of the abbreviations. When did 'th' get abbreviated to 'd'? I suppose she writes like she talks, but why does she talk like that?*daha*writer: janeliewentry found at http://janeliew.livejournal.com/39231.htmlWent t sch, cldnt really wake up, bt yeah dreamt tht she got pissed she said I could hv been 30mins late too y'know.
I shaved!

Well, actually I let the barber shave me. He made a big deal out of it. First he took the beard and mustache off with an electric trimmer - it felt like he was really scraping my face with it. Then he went and got the headrest for the chair, and laid me down on my back, and went to town. There was hot lather. There were hot towels. There was a straight razor with a long disposable razor blade. There was some kind of slightly stingy moisturizer. There were more hot towels. There were cool towels. There was more moisturizer. There was rubbing and massaging of my face. Underneath my skin was raw with some nasty spots from seborrheic dermatitis.I tried to remember the last time I took the beard off, and I can't. 15 years ago? 20? Nawti had never seen me without it. I surprised her with the new look. *daha*Pics after the cut. Here's my new look:That one above was taken the day after. Here's what it looked like a couple hours after I got home:

I guess what it comes down to is that I like weird/goofy stuff. If there's an element of over-the-top bizarre, it will hold my attention long enough to make it through a music video, and I'll even play it again to catch elements I missed the first time through.Example - this nifty little piece called My Hands Are Bananas, from either Nandrews Productions or Yeakel Andrews LTD, depending on whether you believe the Youtube credits or the credit line on the video.*daha*
